Sr1 progress - engine room

I have started to shape up the first air section where brake class selector is located. This will probably be the last update this year. This year was pretty productive and lot of progress was made. I hope the first playable beta of locomotive would be out next year.

Shaping the safety casing of transformer section around the corridor. Air goes to blowers through those vents.

Today I modelled compressor section with main compressor, its drive, smaller aux compressor and air drying unit to ceiling. Because there will be safety grating doors, minor details can be left out as only outlines will be visible.

Added pantograph valve to ceiling. Basically you have only one handle per locomotive that you can attach to either  pantograph valves at opposite ends or grounding switch at the middle. Thus in principle you cannot raise pantograph while the locomotive is grounded and cause short circuit.

I also modelled urinal which is speciality of Sr1 locomotives.

Hkb

Today I started to make Hkb-wagon as test load for physics testing of Sr1. Hkb has been used in finnish freight trains for many decades in numerious cargo roles. Nowdays they can often be found as safety buffers between locomotives and tank wagons containing hazardous materials.

Sr1 progress - cabin expansion

Since the new version of Train Simulator allows more cabin camera viewpoints I am expanding this project to full prototypical setup where you have to toggle all levers and knobs yourself on cold start. On left side  you can see the heart of the locomotive:  main 5771 kVA transformer from Soviet Union.

Today I managed to move the locomotive first time in game with very basic controllers and no sound. Time to move to the next stage: sounds and functionality. TS2014's FOV slider is nice toy to play with:

Sr1 progress - cabin

After many hours I managed to get the weather glass map somewhat smaller. Contrary to the otherwise fine tutorials at ChrisTrains the rain drops seem to be independent of texture size/resolution. What matters is assigned UV space, thus to get smallest water drops you have to scale that part in UV editor to fill most of the space, using multiple bitmaps if necessary.

Added some detailing such as locking grooves that you can hear as crackling sound when lever is moved.

Work on improving drivers brake valves proceeds a hour on a day basis. Today I added some details and reshaped the handle.

Back in action - Sr1 progress

I had really busy September with other projects so this the second and last update this month. Because brake levers are something that player is going to use alot and I managed to find better reference for them I am remodelling them based on accurate drawings with real dimensions.

Altough there were  no updates last week I spent 10 hours modelling and 16 hours rendering  to improve outer walls of cockpit. We are getting there slowly but surely...

Played bit with desk texture, added some gradient and dissolved metal texture to create illusion of brushed metal.

Small update to control desk texturing in cabin. I tried to render reflections with raytracing material in 3ds but it was way too slow so I added some manually with Photoshop.
